The hallmark of a great teacher is someone who can efficiently identify, cultivate, and unleash the potential of any pupil under their tutelage. And truly great teachers can see that potential long before others can. I loved the 2015 movie McFarland, USA because it illustrated this point exactly. Coach White noticed the harsh conditions and sweltering heat his high school students worked in daily in the agricultural fields of southern California. He saw a rare level of physical endurance they already possessed, and that this quality was perfectly suited to the sport of cross country running. After rallying students, school administration, and parents to develop a cross country team, he led the team to unprecedented success in both sports and life.
The best teachers are lifelong learners themselves. Someone who continues to grow and learn not only possesses a reservoir of knowledge to draw upon, but stays close to the “process” of learning in order to lead others through that process as well. For me, the most beautiful scene in the movie was when Coach White was willing to “enter into” the experience of his students by working in the agriculture fields alongside them. Whereas less effective teachers demand respect and trust, Coach White patiently earned it by learning about his students’ lives and sharing the challenges they faced daily. The special bond of respect and trust they enjoyed inspired the students to give beyond their best effort, work sacrificially to reach goals, and ultimately brought their full potential to fruition.
In choosing a piano teacher, many factors must be considered: educational background, documented success with students, location, schedule, price, character, personality, interest in your child and a desire to invest in their life. Each family must carefully weigh these factors as they make the best choice available to them. I advise parents to find the best teacher and then make any adjustments necessary to study with that teacher. Sacrifices in schedule, finances, and location will prove inconsequential if the teacher has the knowledge, skill, and desire to develop your child’s potential.
Piano study is a worthy goal for every child and can provide lifelong fulfillment and satisfaction. With due diligence, every parent can find an excellent teacher who will best fit their child’s needs.
